Kitchen Lane Bridge Repaired.

The bridge from Kitchen Lane onto the Woodland’s Riverside Path, which was damaged by flooding eariler in the week, has now been repaired.

The path is now fully open once again.

Footway Out At Kitchen Lane.

The bridge from Kitchen Lane onto the Riverside Path in the Woodland has been washed out by flooding caused by yesterday’s rain. Access to and from Kitchen Lane is hazardous.

The Woodland Management Team is aware of the damage.

We’re aware of some further tree falls in the Woodland with a tree down across the Phipps Road path at the Byfield Road end, another leaning against a tree but across the path close to Mallard Drive entrance, and finally, a small but heavy one blocking the Mallard Drive entrance to the Woodland.

We will try to get these cleared as soon as we can.

Please take care in the Woodland as, even after winds subside, there may still be trees that present a hazard.

A tree has come down in the woodland close to the Story Circle and is blocking the path running parallel to Phipps Road.

It’s planned to clear it as soon as we can. Please watch out for chain saw work if you are nearby.

We’re also told there are other trees that may be at risk of falling or dropping branches even though winds have dropped, so please take care and watch out if you are in the woods.

There is a tree down across the path along the top of the bank leading north from the Memorial Glade.

It should be cleared this afternoon.

Please be aware of the risk from other trees in the forecast strong winds, especially tomorrow.

Please Don’t Canter, Trot or Gallop.

The Woodland team has noticed that some paths on the bank in the Woodland are experiencing damage from horses.

While the team is happy for horses to be ridden on Woodland paths (except the new path beside Byfield Road) can riders please keep to a walking pace?

This should help to avoid cutting up the paths in Winter.

Please also take care to watch out for those using the Woodland on foot.

A Nursery For The Woodland

The Woodland needs new trees to replace old and fallen trees and to add native species to increase variety. That’s all part of the Woodland Management Plan.

To help this, the woodland team has set up a tree nursery where saplings can be brought on until they are big enough to be planted out to their permanent home in the woods.There’s an electric fence installed to keep wildlife or livestock from nibbling the saplings before they get the chance to establish themselves. Volunteers helped plant saplings to set up the nursery.

Thanks to Geri Rowe for providing the land for the tree nursery and to Geri, Paul and Beverly Blackwell, Ruth Curzon and Thomas Crummy for helping out with the planting.

Paths in the Woodland need regular maintenance to help keep the woods accessible to all.

We will be moving the last piles of planings for this year to take the riverside path up to the top of the cinder path on Saturday morning, 9th October.

Can you come along and help?

We’ll be running a series of one hour shifts 8-9, 9-10 and 10-11 am.

Please bring barrow and a shovel or a rake.

The woodland team are trying to do all they can to keep the paths in the woodland from becoming too muddy, with new surfacing laid when we can in the areas most prone to this.

We particularly ask horse riders to keep their mounts at a walk on the woodland paths.

Even a slow trot can cause the surface to cut up at present, which can cause problems for other users. Thanks to all for your consideration.

We need two enthusiastic residents to join us, contributing to the effective management of the woodland and taking part in our monthly meetings.

We balance the needs of nature, with users and local residents. If you have experience of woodland or park management that would be great, but it is not essential.

The Great Central Woodland Management Team was set up by the Parish Council to manage the woodland on behalf of the village. Meetings usually take place on the last Wednesday of each month. Here are two recent instances of garden and building waste dumped in the Woodland.

Do not dump garden waste or soil as this is classed as fly-tipping and could attract a fixed-penalty fine of £150 to £400.

It also attracts other littering and we want to keep the woodland as free from rubbish as we can for the benefit of all residents.

Removal of Dangerous Trees

Please be aware that there has been work going on in the Great Central Woodland to remove a number of trees. This work is being done together with our Forestry consultant who advises on trees that might be a danger to the public, especially to users of the woodland paths.

We never want to take trees down unless absolutely necessary. The trees being felled are either dead, diseased or leaning dangerously (some trees have a very shallow root base because of the compacted structure of the old railway embankment).

Please watch out for and observe any warning signs.

Just to update folk – a small amount of maintenance has been carried out in the woodland to reduce the number of stumps on the Phipps Road path and to clear some of the scrag hawthorns. We have also removed the fallen branch that was blocking this path and the logs that had been piled up in the story telling circle.

Please Help Them To Survive

Earlier this year the village was given hundreds of new tree saplings by the Woodland Trust to  help improve the diversity of trees in the Woodland.

Local residents helped to plant these out; young plants protected by plastic sleeves to help make sure they survived and thrived.

Sadly, in some places the plastic sleeves have been stripped off and, in others, saplings uprooted. One area, see below, has had all the new trees uprooted.

Maybe it’s animals doing this. Maybe it’s just thoughtlessness. Maybe it’s vandalism.

Please, do anything you can to help these young saplings survive by telling kids how important these saplings are, by challenging anyone you see interfering with saplings or by letting the Woodland Management Committee know if you think vandalism is the cause: email the Management Team.

March 25th was the date scheduled for the next meeting of the Woodland Management Committee.

We have decided to cancel this meeting.

The next meeting is currently planned to be April 29th and we will review that nearer the date.

A couple of bits of news from the Woodland team….

Response To Storms Ciara & Dennis.

Following the severe winds between the dates of 07 & 22 February 2020 (including storms Ciara & Dennis) the Woodland team carried out inspections to assess damage.

The storms have caused a number of trees to fall and / or snap (particularly some pines & “frail” older trees).

Inspections have occurred on a regular basis and fallen trees & branches have been cleared from paths (by Paul Blackwell with assistance from Councillor Pat Knight).  We estimate around a dozen trees or large branches affected paths throughout the Woodland.

A further 2 damaged trees have been professionally felled (by Gullivers Tree Solutions) and some small fallen trees blocking the entrance to the Woodland from Kitchen Lane have also been cleared.

Some New Oaks

It’s not all bad news for the trees in the Woodland. Wendy Silverwood kindly donated some young oak saplings to the Woodland. These have now been planted in the Woodland as part of our plan to increase the number of native broad leaf species in the woods.

Station Road Ramp

As a result of funding made available by the Parish Council, the Woodland team has been able to carry out work to re-profile the path up the bank from Station Road. (see picture)

The resurfacing and lower gradient should make access easier, especially to the Memorial Glade, and the surface should be less muddy in wet weather.

Work was done to conserve the pillar at the end of the bridge retaining wall. The cap stone for the pillar has also been put back in position.

With the installation of the plaque on the Glade’s Memorial Stone it is a good time to say a big “Thank You” to all those that made this possible, to Kay Coles (whose original idea it was) and to Peter Deverill who led the project for the Woodland Management Committee.

A big thank you to the volunteers who came along in the horrible weather this morning to help plant new trees in the Woodland.

The new trees were donated by the Woodland Trust and we planted at least 275 of them in the wetland area of the woods after clearing the ground together. Well done guys good job done thank you.

This will help re-establish some traditional English broad leaf trees in the riverside part of the Woodland.

Memorial Plaque Installed

Many thanks to Ian Dobson and Byron Potter for installing the new memorial plaque on the stone in the Woodland’s Memorial Glade.

The new plaque will carry nameplates for any in the village wishing to have their loved ones remembered here. To find out more about how you can have a plaque added to the stone see the Memorial Glade Guidelines.

Just so folk know…

The surveying work currently (Thursday a.m.) being done on the Station Road end of the path across to the Co-op is associated with the work that the Woodland Management Committee hopes to get done to provide a gentler slope up the bank that could be used by motorised wheelchair users, for example.

We don’t yet have confirmation that this work can be done. The survey work is being done to ensure it is costed accurately and to provide a design that we hope will allow us to get funding support.

Improving Station Road Access

One of the projects that the Woodland Management Team has been keen to get done is to improve the sloped access up the Bank at the Station Road entrance.

The aim is to reduce the slope in order to make it easier to get to the Memorial Glade and across to the Co-op.

Work is currently going on to change the route of the path up the bank to make the slope gentler.

Please watch out for digging work at the Station Road end of the path.

While this is happening there is a short diversion to the path but this is steeper than the current path – you may prefer to go around by the road until the work is complete.

It’s rather short notice but the Woodland team has the use of a chipping machine for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday next week to help clear more vegetation and to continue the work on improving path surfaces.

Volunteers are needed to help feed wood into the machine and rake chippings over the paths, mainly at the Byfield Road end of the Bank.

Sessions will run from 9:30 to 12:00 and from 1:00 to 3:30 on each day.

We really need two people for each session.

Hard hats and face masks provided, you just need yourself and a bottle of water (if the weather’s anything like last week!).

Tree Felling Will Be Restarting Next Week

We have just been told that our felling contractors, Powell Forestry, expect to be returning to work in the Great Central Woodland next week.

Work will include:-

Clearance of previously felled timber.

Creating another “ride” through the woodland : a break intended to allow remaining trees to grow more strongly.

Thinning trees on the bank adjacent to the Cinder Path and Pig Path.

We do not have exact dates and times yet but we will post details as soon as we do.

Please take care if you are in the woodland; follow warning signs and the directions of our contractors.

Please warn children that it is NOT SAFE for them to play in the woodland during felling operations.

Felled timber is the property of the contractors and is helping to save the village the costs of the felling. Felled timber should not be taken from the Woodland.

Why is this being done?

This is all part of the work we need to do to manage the Woodland. We are removing some trees so that the others can grow better. The tracks in the woodland are also being widened. This process, called ‟thinning” is part of the long-term Management Plan agreed with the Forestry Commission.

How Has This Been Planned?

This is part of the largest forestry project carried out in the Woodland for twenty years. It involves the removal of around 600 tonnes of timber. The costs of the work are being covered by sale of the timber, which is also returning cash to the Parish’s accounts for the benefit of the village. It will put the Woodland on a sound footing for the next ten years.

All work carried out in the Woodland is done under a Management Plan that has been agreed with the Forestry Commission. The Plan was developed and approved by the Woodland Management Committee. The Commission has provided a felling license that allows this work to be carried out.  For information a copy of the license is available here: Great Central Woodland Felling License.  It refers to “Part 1” this can be found in the Management Plan available here.

What Will The Impact of This Work Be?

Unfortunately, during this work, there will be some inconvenience to those living nearby and to users of the Woodland.

The Woodland Management Committee is working with the contractors to minimise any problems but wishes to apologise for any inconvenience resulting from these essential works.

Work is now nearly finished on the Memorial Glade in the woodland, a space for quiet reflection and to memorialise local residents and others with a connection with Woodford.

The Memorial Stone is intended to carry plaques to list those remembered. We think we need a metal plate about 2 feet x 3 feet for the face of the stone that will carry the plaques and an engraved message but no-one in the current team has the skills, tools or materials to create this.

Apologies to anyone that is disturbed by the work going on in the woodland this week, especially folks in Sidney Road, Cherwell Terrace and Bankside.

We are using a motorised chipping machine to grind up some of the small branches left over from the felling. This will help to tidy up and to improve the surface on the long path running from the Memorial Glade in the south to the Byfield Road in the north.

The chipping is going on over three days – today, Tuesday & Wednesday. Village volunteers and staff from Cummins are helping. Work will be between 10:00am and 3:30pm each day. The chipper will move along the path as the work is done, so we hope that the noise will not be too much of a problem in any one place.

The people working on the chipping machine are briefed on safety and keep a watch for walkers and dogs but please, if you are using the path, keep an ear out for us and watch out.
