After the first World War, a “Director” class 4-4-0 locomotive – number 1165, “Valour” – was dedicated as a memorial to the employees of the Great Central Railway that had died in the conflict. One of the locomotive’s two nameplates is preserved in the National Railway Museum in York.

To commemorate this, and in memory of Mr & Mrs Stanley Harris and their son Peter, an information board featuring an image of the locomotive and its plate has been erected in the Memorial Glade.
